Digital Love

Released June 11th, 2001

Ethereal synthesizer chords open it up, with the sampled melody softly looping, as if in the distance. These dreamy overtures put you in a hazy, bright mood, almost as if you’ve closed your eyes on a warm summer day and smiled. You know the feeling. Then the first vocod-ed lyrics hit you, along with a super simple driving beat, and you realize you’re having the most amazing dream:

Last night, I had a dream about you
In this dream, I’m dancing right beside you

What a joyous occasion – you’re dancing beside someone you clearly care about deeply. Because they’re in your dreams! Let that sink in for a moment.

And it looked, like everyone was having fun
That kind of feeling, I’ve waited so long

As a DJ for the last 20 years, this simple couplet rings (along with my ears), and always makes me nostalgic, warm, almost on the verge of happy tears sometimes to be honest. Daft Punk did such a good job setting the scene here already and we’re only 0:38 seconds into the song.

Why? I used to wait so long for the moment where I was not only playing a party, but everyone was dancing, and maybe everyone was drunk enough or high enough on whatever substances or just in that jolly, carefree mood enough. The mood where, when you play that remix of a hit song you’ve had on repeat the last 6 weeks, the crowd just dances to the beat, especially on the drop. “I’ve waited so long” for that so many times in my life – through lectures, through subway rides, through practice sets, through touring the club before booking it, through giving out the flyers…I’ve waited so long for that feeling and it feels so good to be there finally.

Don’t stop, come a little closer
As we jam, the rhythm gets stronger
There’s nothing wrong, with just a little, little fun
We were dancing all night long

The time is right, to put my arms around you
You’re feeling right, you wrap your arms around too...

Things are escalating as the song gets more intense – the rhythm is getting stronger. There’s nothing wrong with that though! We’re just having a little innocent fun. Enjoying the rhythm and the song and the people around you and before you know it, you were dancing all night long. Sometimes it just happens like that and it’s amazing.

This is the most marvelous night of your life, the night you’ve dreamed about – and also when the lyrics diverge into the love story they really are, becoming personified, wrapping your arms around this individual, the time is right.

But what if this person is the song itself? Maybe Daft Punk is wrapping their arms metaphorically around this beat, around this feeling, around this sampled melody from “I Love You More” by George Duke.

But suddenly, I feel the shining sun
Before I knew it, this dream was all gone

It was too heavenly, too good, everything was too right – you feel the shining sun and the dream was all gone. Like so many of our dreams.

Ooh, I don’t know what to do
About this dream and you
I wish this dream comes true

Ooh, I don’t know what to do
About this dream and you
We’ll make this dream come true

Tossing and turning as you wake up, sweating bullets, you have NO idea what to do – this dream was incredibly powerful. So you do the only thing you can do – make the dream come true.

This is when the heavy dance beats come in and it hits you that you can do it! Through the power of the music, the synthesizers, mixing the songs together, Light Emitting Diodes, a smooth wooden dance floor, and maybe some mesmerizing intoxicants along the way, you can have this amazing night that you’ve only dreamed about, where the people you care about are dancing right beside you.

⭐ May the stars align to grant you a night like this dream. ⭐
